The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society is unique in that we donate the net proceeds. Since 2003, the festival has donated over $700,000 to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation and the Nanaimo Community Hospice Society to assist in the diagnostic and treatment process, and care of, breast cancer patients.Â
The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society has been designated a position on the Platinum Donor Wall at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital which is the highest honour of donor recognition provided by the Foundation. “The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society has demonstrated true leadership in support of local healthcare excellence,” says Maeve O’Byrne, President of the Foundation. “They join only a handful of other community organizations who have donated such extraordinary sums of money to our hospital over the years. We are incredibly grateful for their support.”
"Funds generously donated from the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society are greatly appreciated and go towards providing programs and services for individuals who are dying, care-giving and grieving,' notes Jeanne Fahlman Nanaimo Community Hospice Society Director of Development.
In 2016, Nanaimo Hospice's 250 volunteers reported over 30,000 volunteer hours; their professional counselors saw 436 NEW clients and attended 2,096 grief group sessions; there were over 600 lends from our library and to date 5,723 comfort cushions and 1,572 comfort shawls were lovingly created by volunteers.Â
We are honoured to be recognized for making contributions towards the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients on Central Vancouver Island but the paddlers, sponsors, volunteers and members of the general public who support our event are the true heroes.
